Walter Flores has over 17 years of professional experience serving as a researcher, international consultant, lecturer and  project manager in the areas of health systems, monitoring and evaluation of inequalities and health sector reforms. His professional work has been performed in over 19 countries in Latin America, Africa, Middle East, Asia and Europe. He holds a B.A. Social Psychology from California State University (USA), Master in Community Health from the School of Tropical Medicine in Liverpool, England and a doctorate (PhD) in Development and Evaluation of Health Systems from the same school.

Ismael Gómez Sánchez

Ismael Gomez Sanchez is a  Physician and Surgeon (University of San Carlos de Guatemala), Master in Public Health (Centro Universitario de Salud Pública, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain), Public Health and Information Management (San Diego State University).  He has experience working as  a medical doctor  in public health services, General Coordinator of Health (Food for the Hungry Guatemala), Hospital Distrital Uspantan, Technical Assistant and Program Coordinator of Rural Health (MSPAS KfW), Technical Assistant in the Project: Strengthening Secondary care (MSPAS / PAHO), Health Advisor for the  Project PRRAC-SALUD/UE, External consultant for the Municipios Democráticos Program / EU Research Assistant Project Governance and Equity in Health / IDRC, other technical assistance to research projects and international cooperation.

Ana Salguero Lorena Ruano
Research Assistant
 
Ana Lorena Ruano is a sociologist graduated from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, and has postgraduate studies in social development with a focus on decentralization and social participation at the same  university. She is currently a PhD student (part time) in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University of Umeå in Sweden. Her thesis is about the role of social participation in the governance of local health systems in Guatemala. Over the past six years, she has worked as a research assistant on several projects related to equity, governance and social participation in the health system in Guatemala.

Denise Phe Funchal 
Research Assistant
 
Denise Phe Funchal is a sociologist from University of San Carlos de Guatemala, holds a diploma of specialization in gender studies from Autonomous University of Mexico. She is currently doing a thesis for  a Master of Social Psychology and Political Violence, and studying the MA in History, both at the University of San Carlos. She also has a degree in video production and editing by the School of Communication Sciences of the USAC. In the health area, she has worked in the areas of  sexual and reproductive health for women maquila workers. Other social research areas include: Consequences of the internal armed conflict in Guatemala, Reparations and impunity for war crimes, indigenous legal systems, security and democracy.

Alison Hernández

Guest Researcher at CEGSS  

                                                       

Alison Hernandez holds a BA in History from Bryn Mawr University and a Masters in Public Health and BS in Nursing from the University of Alabama in Birmingham.  She has worked with health promotion and improving cultural and linguistic accessibility of health services for Latino immigrants in the USA.  She is currently a PhD student in Public Health at Umea University in Sweden. Her research focuses on the role and practice of mid-level health workers in the provision of primary health care services in rural areas of Guatemala.

 

 

Raphael Zepeda 

Communications Assistant
Rafa Zepeda is an informatics technician. He has worked the past three years supporting the processes of communication and dissemination of the various projects and studies implemented in the CEGSS.

Carlos Quiñonez

Supports data entry

Is studying Bussiness Administration. Within CEGSS, he supports data entry for all the different research projects. He also support the logistics for field research and dissemination events
